Future of New Packaging Materials

This “Hot Topic” report draws on the expertise of Publisher’s exclusive panel of industry executives to provide the latest thinking about organizations’ views on the future of new packaging materials. Furthermore, the survey focuses on the current use of packaging materials as well as new packaging materials that are emerging in the packaging industry

 

Of respondents within Europe, 55% believe that biodegradable materials have the highest opportunities and the primary benefit of environmental friendliness. For such quality of packaging, companies in Europe are most likely to be willing to pay an extra 2-5% for such packaging. This region also believes that the food sector will see the most innovative new uses of materials in the next five years. Furthermore, in order to reduce the carbon footprint, respondents consider materials that are obtained through the recycling process; 72% highlighted it as the most environmentally friendly. Additionally, in order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, 29% of respondents from Asia-Pacific are willing to pay 5-10% extra on algae-based materials. Algae-based polymers and blends are projected to witness increased demand over the next couple of years due to the eco-friendly nature.
